About the Author
Steve Briggs grew up in the Midwest. His passion was sports—basketball in winter and tennis when the snow melted. After high school, Steve headed to the University of Arizona in 1971 on an athletic scholarship where he studied English literature, became a vegetarian, and adopted meditation as a training technique for competitive excellence.
Two years later, on a Swiss mountain near St. Moritz, Steve met his guru Maharishi Mahesh Yogi while studying to become a teacher of Transcendental Meditation. Returning from his Alpine sabbatical, he instructed hundreds of students in the art of TM while playing for a team that twice finished in the top 10 in the NCAA championships.
After coaching tennis in the USA and Europe, he joined an international group of monks in Europe in 1982. Living a cloistered life, Steve received a Doctorate in Vedic Science and later traveled to far-flung corners of the world to teach meditation. The author has spent a quarter of his life outside the US, including seven years teaching meditation in India. Before returning to the west, he settled into a remote Himalayan ashram in an enchanted region known as the Valley of the Saints. The author now lives in the pastoral silence of rural Iowa, spending his winters writing and his summers camping in the Rockies with his wife and her son.
